Charles Whitehead was a novelist who was much neglected at the time and died in poverty in Melbourne in 1862. James Stephens pioneered the 8 hour movement in Australia. Francis Adams was a novelist working in Melbourne. He returned to England and shot himself as he was dying of tuberculosis.
