Information is easier to access than ever before, with search engines, journals, news outlets, and social media all offering different perspectives. AI tools can help you gather information from multiple sources, summarise key points, and present your findings in a format that suits your needs. However, they should support – not replace – your core research skills.
The ability to think critically about the source of your information is with you. Take the CRAAP test, or ask yourself these 5 essential research questions:
What am I trying to find out?
Before you start your research, take a moment to clarify your topic or question. Do you need a quick answer, background information, instructions, or opinions? A clear question usually leads to better search results.
Where is this information from?
Not all resources are the same. Some may be created by experts, others may be from organisations, news outlets, community groups, or AI generated. Resources may present facts, personal opinions, promotions, or adverts. Ask yourself:
- Who wrote this?
- Is it a government, education, news, or community organisation?
- Are there references, links, or sources listed?
- What is the tone of the information: Careful? Emotional? Balanced? Extreme?
When was this information published?
Information changes over time, especially in areas like technology, health, and current events. Check:
- Is there a date of publication or update?
- Is the information relevant today?
Why was this information created?
Information always has a purpose. Ask:
- Is it intended to inform, persuade, or entertain me?
- Is it someone trying to sell me something?
- Is it presenting facts, opinions, both?
How can I check this somewhere else?
Information can sometimes be verified if you see it in more than one place. Try:
- Checking for the same facts in another book, website, newspaper, or library database.
- Looking for alternative perspectives in another resource
- Asking a librarian for help
