General notes:
Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1912History:The house at 17 Epsom Road was built c.1912. It was first listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1913, when it was occupied by George Humphrey, who remained there until at least 1930..Description:The house at 17 Epsom Road is a single-storey, block-fronted Edwardian villa with a hipped and gabled corrugated galvanised steel roof. L-shaped in plan, the house has a projecting gabled bay with shingles and a timber finial to the gable end. The adjacent verandah has turned timber posts and ornate cast iron lacework. Chimneys are of red brick with roughcast rendered cappings, typical of the Queen Anne style. Alterations include the replacement of the original windows, probably double-hung sashes, and the construction of a low, cream brick front fence>.Significance:The house at 17 Epsom Road, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. It is a reasonably intact example of the type of Edwardian villas which were built in this part of Kensington in the 1910s, and relates visually to its neighbours at 7, 19 and 21 Epsom Road. It represents the major, formative phase of development of Kensington west of Epsom Road.
