General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : APeriod : Inter War (1928-1929)Grantee : R McGeorge 1858Mrs. Bridget and John R. Mulcahy of the Bay View Hotel, redeveloped their building and adjoining row houses to cover the entire block, between Munster and Stanley Street. This was in 1928-9 and to the design of prolific hotel architects, Sydney Smith, Ogg and Serpell.A two-storey, stuccoed brick parapetted hotel with corner towers, a central Ionic colonnaded verandah and symmetrical fenestration. Ornament and form derives from the Greek Revival, with the saltire-cross in window glazing and panels on the façade, string-moulds containing fluted friezes, and a matching parapet entablature to the protruding verandah, with acroteria distributed about the dentillated cornice. Of particular importance is the glazed ceramic tile dado with its checker frieze and tripartite driplets. Notable features include tiles; window metal work; elaborate/high standard design of cement rendered surfaces.Architecturally, of the Greek Revival hotels designed by this firm this is the most original, well sited and skilfully designed: of State-wide importance. Historically, traditionally a hotel site from the 19th century: of local interestThis building has been converted into apartments.
