Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1912History:The pair of houses at 31-33 Epsom Road was constructed c.1912. The houses are first listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1913, when the occupants were Mrs Emily Foster and George Jardine respectively..Description:The houses at 31-33 Epsom Road are single-storey, semi-detached, block-fronted Edwardian cottages with corrugated galvanised steel gabled roofs. The houses display a variety of decorative details. Each has a small bullnose profile verandah with turned timber posts. Gable ends have paired timber brackets, pressed metal infill and timber finials. The paired, timber-framed double-hung sashes have scalloped window sills. Ornated cast iron lacework survives at No. 33. Chimneys are of red brick with terracotta pots and rendered cappings..Significance:The houses at 31-33 Epsom Road, Kensington, are of local historical and aesthetic importance. Aesthetically, the composition of the pair is particularly unusual in the area; as such, the houses make an important aesthetic contribution to the streetscape. Historically, the houses represent the major, formative phase of development in this part of Kensington.
