F.J. Kercrouse owned these row houses, built in 1882, for over 15 years and leased them to such tenants as John Cowan, a bootmaker, Harry Hudson, a bicycle maker, James Donaldson, a tobacconist and Alfred Travis.Description- A pair of corniced and parapetted, one-storey row houses with cast-iron and timber verandahs and iron picket fences. The parapet entablatures are arched, scrolls support the piers at the sides and an acroterion is placed atop each arch. Cast-iron friezes are set in panels at the verandah bressumer.Integrity - The parapet name of 31 has been defaced, the basalt fence plinth painted and the roof gutter replaced on 31.Streetscape - Contributing part of the Carroll Street residential precinctSignificance-Architecturally, skillfully ornamented and original row houses using a much repeated form within the inner suburbs, and an essential part of a row house precinct; of local importance.Historically, one of the several small Kercrouse developments in the study area; of local interestReferences:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1. Prior of the West, a very powerful brown colt, rising 3 yrs old ; Lord of the Manor, a dark bay, rising 3 yrs old ; and Young King Tom, a dark bay, rising 5 yrs old. Money, I hear, can buy no better animals of their class, and no doubt they will be found valuable acquisitions at their new destination. Kercrouse and Madden, of Melbourne, and the steamer is expected to arrive here at the end of next month. Mr. J. Burley, the firm's agent, was about to proceed to Australia, having been suc cessful in selling all the animals of the last batch, but he has received instructions to remain here and take charge of the new batch. Mr. Burley has been amongst us for some time now, and a more obliging agent Colombo buyers have not had the pleasure of dealing with. Four pairs are included in the batch that is com ing up next month on orders for local residents, and Messrs.
