General notes:
Copyright - Brotherhood of St LaurenceCamp Pell washing lines amongst huts, late 1940's.Notes: Corrugated partitions are noted alongside huts on each side of the scene, assembled in a somewhat dishevelled manner. Carpet rugs and other laundry adorn a clothesline erected in a similar fashion. This photographic study perfectly projects the isolating desolation of abject poverty.Camp Pell was an army camp within Royal Park in the suburb of Parkville. It was initially known as Camp Royal Park but was renamed Camp Pell in honour of Major Floyd Pell of the 33rd Pursuit Squadron USAAC. In 1946, it became home for around 3,000 people experiencing the post-war housing shortage in Victoria. Many needed temporary accommodation, having been directly affected by 'slum reclamation' policies. Camp Pell became well-known for its poor living conditions and the overall disregard of its inhabitants by the government of the time. The looming 1956 Melbourne Olympics saw the camp's closure. Families were ultimately moved on to public housing developed by the Victorian Housing Commission. Royal Park was returned to public parkland in time for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Anzac Hall was the only building left behind and was left unused from 1956 to 1970.(Source: https://www.ozatwar.com/ozatwar/camppell.htm)(Source: http://bsltimeline.pbworks.com/w/page/5583987/Camp%20Pell)(Source: http://warinvic.blogspot.com/2013/11/camp-pell-royal-park-then-now-ptii.html)(Source: https://www.urbancamp.org.au/our-history)
