General notes:
This is from a photograph by Peter Downton (Architect) of an engraving dated probably late 1860s. It shows Hotham as viewed from the National Museum, then in the grounds of the University.Prominent buildings are (from left to right) the Wesleyan Church (corner of Queensberry and Courtney Streets, 1867-demolished 1936) Wesleyan School, St Mary's Church, Corner Howard and Queensberry Streets, the frirst Town Hall (1862-1875), and the Benevolent Asylum straddling Victoria Street at Curzon Street - the first building in North Melbourne (demolished 1911).In the foreground are Flemington Road and the creek, which flowed from Ievers Reserve in Parkville, under the present North Melbourne Primary School, and Harris Street. running into the swamp near the North Melbourne Football Ground. The creek seriously delayed expansion of the town northwards. To control regular flooding, it was made into a storm water channel in 1866 at a cost of £4,957. Because of pollution from the growth of population and spread of industry, it was covered with a brick barrel vault in 1880 at a cost of £3,967.The treatment of the creek, being beyond the resources of the Hotham Council, was financed by the Government. To recoup the expenses this incurred, the Government subdivided the surrounding area, bounded by O'Shanassy, Dryburgh and Flemington Road, land that had been reserved for parks and gardens in the land sales of 1854. The Hotham Council vigourously resisted this move, however were powerless as the area was Crown Land.Notes by Dr J Blanchard - as stated by him at the time (1970s) and should be confirmed. The street configuration noted above is not possible.
