GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985: C (333) D (331)Period: Early Victorian (1870-1875)Grantee : J Harbison 1864History- Dealer, Michael McSweeney, owned and occupied this building from its construction some time between c1870 and 1875 to after 1905.Description- A two-storeyed stuccoed brick former residence, with a corniced and parapeted roof line and simple fenestration. An adjoining building 331, a single storey parapeted brick dwelling, appears united with 333.Integrity - 331-3 are generally original except for the doors and painted brickwork on 331.Streets cape - 331-3 matches in finish and its generally simple form 323, 325, 337-9 Queensberry Street.Significance- Architecturally, 333 is of a common form, but expresses its age and reinforces the streetscape: of local importance.Historically, of local interest as one of a group of owner-occupied tradesmen’s houses.Recommendations - restore door (four-panel?) and repaint in typical or original colours.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1. Prisoner is an old convict, haring passed seven months out of the present year in goal for similar offences. He pleaded 'very hard for another chance telling the Bench that lie was 87 years of age and it was useless telling old man like him to gaol as it would only be an extra expense to the government. He also pleaded that Christmas was near and that with all his faults he had never been before the Hotham bench before. The old man's arguments prevailed and he was told to be off. '.1884Geelong Advertiser (Vic. : 1859 - 1929)Tuesday 1 January 1884 - Page 3https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/149145096According to a brief report received by the Chief Commissioner of Police from Superintendent Sadleir to-day, respecting the attack on Constable Michael McSweeney, by Hotham larrikins, on Saturday night, the injured officer was still lying unconscious, and in a precarious condition. The principal offender has been arrested.Geelong Advertiser (Vic. : 1859 - 1929)Friday 1 February 1884 - Page 3`Some slight change has at length taken place in the condition of Constable Michael McSweeney, whose life has for balance, in consequence of a blow received on the head during an affray with some desperate larrikins in Hotham. To-day the unfortunate constable was able to sit up in bed for a short time, but he is still suffering most severely from the effects of his maltreatment, and it seems doubtful whether, in the event of his partial recovery, his brain will ever quite get over | the shock, nor can he yet be said to be out of danger.
