The house stands on Crown Land Portion No 20 which was bought by Joseph Anderson on 14 March 1849 for #342. The nine and a half acre allotment began to be sub-divided in 1852 and in September of that year. Lots 40 to 44 measuring 145' x 132' were sold to William Wright who sold one third of the land to William Macredie in 1857.Macredie built a two storey brick, plaster rendered house of eight rooms and outbuildings in 1857/8 and lived there until his death in 1891. The house passed to his widow and then to his daughter Alice, who retained the house until it was purchased around 1920 by Harry Emmerton for his daughter, who was to become Dame Mabel Brookes, and her husband Sir Norman Brookes. It remained in the Brookes family for more than 50 years.In 1978 the property was acquired by the Italian Consulate to be used as an Italian Cultural Centre.
