General notes:
Grading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1873)Grantees : G Holmes, E Wills 1858The estate agents, Clark and Leonard had these houses built as a speculative proposition in 1873, although Henry Clark did live in 219 for a time. The subsequent owner Samuel Flattow (1880-1895) lived in 223 from 1887 until at least 1895. Other occupants appear to be mostly from the professions i.e. William Allen, veterinarian (221, 1887), William Begg, teacher (225, 1895), and business i.e. Jules Gascard, horse dealer (215, 1874-87), Abraham Simmonds, merchant. (217, 1874-80). Briefly a resident was a member of North Melbourne's first permanent family, Alfred Mattingly.Two-storey, polychrome brick and parapetted row houses, with two-level cast-iron and timber verandahs. A simple, gabled entablature typifies the row's construction date, whilst the panelled iron friezes and bellied balustrade panels are similar to Anderson and Bruce's patented design of 1873, the year of the terrace's construction. The slim timber posts and rails which support them are unusual. Narrow sidelights to doorways and toplights are also unusual. Hoop-iron garden dividing fences have survived, whilst originally garden pathways were probably gravel and asphalted soon afterwards. Notable features include the verandah decoration.Architecturally, a relatively early row but with little architectural pretensions and generally altered in finish and detail: of local importance. Historically, originally providing rental housing for the more wealthy of North Melbourne's citizens: of local interest.
