General notes:
Period: VictorianDate: c.1874History: The land at 185 Walsh Street was purchased in 1846 for £140. A nine-room brick house was constructed on the site in 1874, by builder John Bell for William H Jarrett. The rate books show that Jarrett had by 1895, enlarged the house to eleven rooms... By 1916, Miss Mary Jarrett had become the owner/occupier, and remained so until at least 1940... The house was converted into flats by 1966.Description: Ithaca is a double-storey rendered masonry Italianate house. The front elevation, facing what is now the back garden, has a verandah and balcony with cast iron lacework friezes and balustrading. The windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes, some with semi-circular arched heads. The hipped slate roof has bracketed eaves and is penetrated by rendered chimneys with moulded caps. The addition to the south was constructed during the inter-War period.Significance: ...of metropolitan historical and aesthetic significance. Historically, the house is one of the few remaining nineteenth century mansions in this part of South Yarra, and demonstrates the desirability of the suburb as a prestigious residential area for Melbourne's wealthy. Superficially altered, the house is a good example of the Italianate style, displaying typical characteristics including cast iron verandah and asymmetrical composition.
