General notes:
Image held by East Melbourne Library. The Cairns Memorial Church, built 1882-84, stands on the corner of Powlett and Hotham Streets, East Melbourne. In 1988, it was nearly destroyed in a huge fire. The remaining shell was to be demolished due to fears that it was unstable. However, by October it was deemed safe by engineers and allowed to remain standing, although its future use was unknown. It was not until 1998 that work began on transforming the remains of the building into several exclusive, luxury apartments, which can now be seen on the site. The transept was built in 1882 and the church completed by the addition of the nave in 1884. The first organ was also installed in 1884.
