GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Federation (1900)Grantee : Charles Hill 1864History- William Rook, a carpenter of Mary Street, North Melbourne, financed and built this large row house in 1900.Description- A double fronted, single storey, parapetted row house with iron verandah decoration and picket fencing. The entablature is gabled, possessing acroteria, and the flanking parapet is decorated in a guilloche pattern. Orbs to the parapet, and brackets to the cornice and open work iron fence piers constitute the balance of the ornament.Integrity - Generally original.Streetscape - Contributing part of a cohesive residential streetscape.Significance - Architecturally, a late example of a competently decorated, common row house form in a residential streetscape: of local importance.Historically, another example of a local builder's investment in his locality: of local interest.Recommendations –NoneReferences:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory; BW= MMBW Property Service File)1.
