General notes:
Type/Original use: Flats/ResidenceStyle: Derivative Arts & CraftsPeriod: [Edwardian]Construction date: 1907Materials: slate roofNotable features/Significance: The informal arrangement of gables, chimneys and open balconies of this building gives a picturesque composition reminiscent of the work of CFA Voysey. This is further highlighted by the very large, steep roof line turning into a skillion. The chimneys are tapered ad crowned with chimney posts and the garden wall becomes integral with the building on the Acland Street elevation.Architect: Klingender & AlsopBuilder: William J Fowles Hopetoun Ave, Canterbury36 for Donald McKinnon, 38 for WIlliam Moody HyndmanOccupier/Owner 1910: D MacKinnon/McKinnon Hilde (36)1910: W M Hyndman (38)1946: Fred K Davies/Baillieu Everard (36 - flat)1946: Baillieu Everard (38 - flat)1955 to 1984: US Consulate residences/US Government (36/38)Alterations & additions: 36 - 1934, 38 - 1927, 1934The original Crown Land Portions 9 and 10, comprising 20 acres, was bought by Colonel Joseph Anderson in 1849. His son, William Acland Anderson, was given several acres of land by his father and proceeded to build a large two storeyed house thereon in 1871.The house and land later passed to Edmond Fitzgibbon, Melbourne's formidable Town Clerk from 1856 to 1891.On the death of Fitzgibbon, in 1905, part of the estate was sub-divided and in 1908, on a block measuring 165x200 feet, the existing large pair of houses was erected.No. 38 was built for WM Hyndham, a Collins Street accountant, and No. 36, a really large house of thirty three rooms, was to be the residence of Donald MacKinnon, a barrister and grazier, who was MLS for Prahran from 1900 to 1920.Later owners included Everard Bailleau, director of a large Melbourne estate agency and descendent of an important Victorian pioneer family. From 1955 onwards the pair of houses has been the property of the United States Government, providing residential accommodation for their employees and visitors.
