GRAEME BUTLER 1983,1991 CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991: CPeriod: Mid Victorian (1879)Grantee: W McGirr 1864History- Samuel Merrifield, a carpenter owned these two houses from their construction in 1879 and resided in 244 Errol Street until he sold both houses to a Mr. B. Jones, possibly the district engineer of the railways, in 1889. From then on until 1895, they were let to Patrick Quinn, a letter sorter; William Morrison, a traveller and a blacksmith, John Russell.Description- Single-storeyed and single-fronted brick row houses with verandahs and iron fences. The parapet entablature is gabled, with acroteria and flanking urns and the secondary entablature is panelled. The windows are bayed.Integrity - The iron verandah decoration is gone and the brickwork painted.Streetscape - Contributing part of a cohesive residential streetscape.Significance- Architecturally, altered and incomplete but early examples of a common type, which contribute to a streetscape: of local interest.Historically, housed typically, the labouring class of the area.Recommendations - Consider removing paint from brickwork, repainting trim and replacing cast-iron as original or typical..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1, RB 1880-81, 1655, 6; 9B 1989-90, 1674;2.
