General notes:
Grading as at 2002 : DPeriod : Inter warSmall-scale factories are a characteristic of the built form of the mixed-use precincts in inner Melbourne. However unlike the small streets and tight sites of Collingwood and Richmond, the later development in North Melbourne had wide streets, a more attractive elevated aspect and often larger sites. The quality of residential development was higher as a consequence and higher quality development is also reflected on industrial sites. The factory façades often receive some otherwise unnecessary adornment through the parapet, and the application of a more residential scale to the openings on the façade. The small industrial building at 60-62 Courtney Street, probably constructed in the 1920's, illustrates this well-mannered approach. The parapet has an applied curved form, and the steel framed windows which flank a small central opening have a low sill. The fenestration, including the steel framing to the windows, is substantially intact, including an early and likely original, roller shutter door.It is a good example of the integration of industrial and residential development in the mixed-use North Melbourne area. It also contributes to the context for the adjoining B graded buildings at 64 and 56-58 Courtney Street, and to the form, scale and period of the level 2 streetscape opposite. This building has since been demolished.
