For decades, members of his family In Britain had been apothecaries. The word has long since been out of fashion. Mr. Francis tried his hand at gold mining In Victoria but found he was unsuited to the task. He then hired a dray and hawked his "apothecarial" wares around the turbulent mining communities. In 1860, he became engaged to Miss Lavender, daughter of the governor of the now notorious penal, settlement Maria Island, Port Arthur, Tasmania.Bought BusinessThe same, year he bought the pharmaceutical business of Mr. S. J. T. Croad in Bourke-street. This business came into being on August 24, 1849. The business was renamed Henry Francis. Through the years, there have been many changes in address and personnel, and trade has grown with the city. In 1927, the business was transferred to the present premises,. Francis House. This building was erected by the firm. It was awarded the gold medal that year for architectural design.
