Not to be included on the National Estate Register1 HistoricalFirst occupied in 1923 (1). The owner Narylie Khyat (Khyat and Co. ) took part of the first floor. The other tenants were A. Michaels, S.M. Jabor, Karoola Shirt Manufacturing Co., Victory Manufacturing Co., J.L. Sionim and Co. (2). It appears that business turned sour for Khyat late in the 20's because rates remained uncollected for several years.2 Architectural2.1 Designed by Arthur and Hugh Peck, Architects. A permit for the building was granted in May 1921.W. Roger was the builder and the value of the conContract was given as £5,400. (3). The same yearˇ appears on the building, although the first rateˇ book reference to the building is in 1923. (1)ˇ2.2 A 3 storey red brick post Edwardian building cement rendered upper part with the company name and cement render over the door with date 1921 in it, flanked by foliage ornamentation. Semi-circular windows on the top floor, the other windows rectangular and two porthole windows linked by vertical strips together and down to the central doorway, and the centre part of the inlaid facade. Parapet portion has enormous swags formed in the cement work and abstract projecting blocks and brackets rather characteristic of the period and reminiscent of the influences of Mackmurdo. At the back the building narrows in about 5 feet and steps down to three very low storeys at the very back, two of which are an old rock faced bluestone building with quoins and dressings around the openings and in the paint work the name Gardner, Gasket, and Felt Co. is visible. The added top floor is in brick.Footnotes(1)M.C.C.
