General notes:
Sketch of North Melbourne Town Hall, c 1880's by W.C. Fitler. Viewpoint from the corner of Errol and Queensberry Streets.Notes: The clock tower clock states the time as being 9:30, presumably in the a.m., considering the degree of activity in the street. The detail is refined, with birds flying over the building, horse drawn carriages parked outside the offices and even an individual who appears to be in a maid's uniform fitting for the period. The fountain is also visible in the scene.William Crothers (WC) Fitler (1857-1915) was born in Philadelphia 1857 and studied art at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He came to Australia with S.B. Schell and W.T. Smedley to work on the production of the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australia from 1884-1888. Little is known of the artist's later period. The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, which was released in 42 supplements between 1886 and 1889, attracted over 50,000 subscribers willing to pay 10 guineas ($1,200 in current prices) in instalments.(Source 1: https://www.nla.gov.au/picturesque-atlas-australasia)(Source 2: https://www.aasd.com.au/artist/13105-william-crothers-fitler/)
