Melbourne Heritage ReviewBuilding Identification Form 1999-Survey Dale May 2000HistoryThese warehouses were constructed in 1886 for Leon Cohen. No 355 was leased to Henry Fisher who ran a waterproof clothing manufacturing business there from 1886 until at least 1900. No. 357 was leased to Cuttle Co. in1887 and then to Mr. E. Murray, a wool-broker from 1888 to 1893. It was listed as vacant between 1894 and 1898. No 357 was occupied by Sarah Edwards, a boot manufacturer from 1898 until at least 1900.DescriptionA three-storey factory/warehouse of brick construction with a rendered facade. A parapet with cornice conceals the roof. The first and second storeys bave timber framed double-hung sash windows divided into four panels by glazing bars. However, the window and door openings at the ground floor have been altered.SignificanceThe former warehouses at 355-357 Exhibition Street, Melbourne, are of local aesthetic and historic importance. They are remnant examples of the types of business premises which proliferated in what is now the central business district during the 1880s Boom period. As an individual building it is an important element in the streetscapeGrading ReviewUnchanged. These three-storey late-Victorian former warehouses provide a setting which reinforces the value of the individual buildings..VICTORIAN HERITAGE INVENTORYH7822-21661866 map - building at rear of site (set back from street).
