General notes:
Period: VictorianConstruction date: c1870s?History:The fence along the Gower Street boundary of Holy Rosary Primary School was originally the front boundary fence of a large property with its driveway at 37 Gower Street, and three smaller properties at Nos. 39-43, all now demolished. The 1895 MMBW detail plan of the area shows a large residence where the school now stands (close to what is now Hampden Road), and a narrow strip of land connecting the property with Gower Street. To the west of the driveway are three smaller houses. The rate books for 1886-1887 show Michael Egan, as the owner of a nine-room stone house with a Nett Annual Value of 100 pounds. The continuous fencing suggests that Egan, listed in the rate books as an architect, may have been responsible for the design and construction of the three, possibly speculative houses.By 1916, Egan's house had been demolished and the present school established on the site, and Egan's gateway retained. The three houses, which were stil listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1972, have since been demolished and their fences retained at the school's fence..Description:The fence at 37 Gower Street has a rough-faced bluestone plinth into which are set cast iron spear-handed pickets. The brick piers have rendered cappings..Significance:The fence at 37-43 Gower Street, Kensington, is of historical interest. The fence is an interesting remnant of one of Kensington's few substantial nineteenth century residences. Also of note is retention of the fence by the Holy Rosary Primary School following the demolition of the houses at Nos. 37-43. The fence makes an interesting contribution to the streetscape.
