Building Type: ResidencePeriod; Date : Mid-Victorian; c.1867?History : The house at 29 Barkly Street appears to have been constructed c.1867. Sands & McDougall directories indicate that Owen O'Callaghan, a detective, occupied a house this site from c.1867 until c.1900.Description: 29 Barkly Street, Carlton is a Victorian double-storey brick residence with a hipped tiled roof concealed behind a parapet. The house adopts a terrace form, and has a double-storey verandah with cast iron lacework friezes, terminated at each end b rendered wing walls. The cast iron balustrading does not appear to be original. windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes. Alternations include the painting of the brickwork and the recladding of the roof in terracotta tiles. the ion palisade fences appear to be original.Significance: The house at 29 Barkly Street, Carlton, is of local aesthetic interest. The house. possibly dating from the 1860's is a typical and relatively intact example of a nineteenth century Italianate style terrace which is an important element in the streetscapeIntactness / Condition : GoodGrading Review: Upgraded from E to D. The houses is representatives of the nineteenth century double-storey terrace house from which predominates in Carlton.
