General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1876)H Breakey 1864GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEHistory- Built in 1876 these row houses belonged to Mrs. Elizabeth Breakey who was presumably the grantee's wife {Hugh Brakey dies 1873}, from their construction in 1876, until they were acquired by Mrs. Campbell in 1890, prior to having 2, 2A Chapman Street built next door {Breakey, Campbell family linked- Elizabeth Breakey remarries as Campbell} .These houses were let to such as Cornelius Callaghan, a labourer; William Mitchell, a blacksmith who was in 6 Chapman Street for over ten years and Robert Munro a carpenter. By 1895, 6 and 4 Chapman Street were leased to women, Sarah Cook and Janet Purdie, respectively.Description- Single-fronted, transverse-gable (originally slated) roofed one-storey row houses of stuccoed brick, with timber framed and bracketted verandahs and slatted timber fences/balustrades at the frontage: typically simply elevated and sited for its age.Integrity - The slate has been replaced with iron on 6 and the stucco stripped off; the fences have gone from 4-6.Streetscape - Contributing and old part of this residential streetscape, relating well to the corner 222 Errol Street.Significance-Architecturally - of a distinctively early detail, form and siting, generally near original and contributive to a streetscape: of regional importance.Historically, one of a number of properties developed by Breakey at this corner, typical of a localised development of an owner-developer: of local interest.Recommendations - Replace fences of 4-6, as 8;paint iron of 6 to match slate;repaint in original or typical colours;consider restuccoing (ruled) 6 and painting to match row.___________________________RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2024:GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM1985___________________________NEWSPAPERS (TROVE):1873THE Friends of the late Mr. HUGH GALT BREAKEY are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, the MelbourneGeneral Cemetery.
