General notes:
NEW LONDON STORES Billiards, Baths and GymnasiumThe clock lower on the Elizabeth .Street Post Office will be reduced to insignificance when the great building now being erected for the London Stores, at the Bourke-Elizabeth street corner Is completed. Already the seventh storey, at. present In course or construction, comes opposite the base of the Post Office clock, and there are tour storeys still to be added. The total height will be 135 feet.Built on ground 130 feet square, the new London Store will possess eleven floors, each of an available area or 13,000 square feet. This space will be devoted exclusively to the exhibition and sale of men's wear. The fittings and show-cases are of the most modern type. In the mercery department, on the ground floor, not a single box will be used; shirts and pyjamas will either be In full view of the customer, in trays under glass counters or stored in open drawers just at the salesman's back.RECREATION AND RESTAmong the novel features of the new Emporium will be a recreation room for customer, a billiard room open to the public, and also to be used for exhibition matches between "star" players, a gymnasium attached to the sportswear department, and club rooms where country patrons may rest and read, or write. The entire space of the fifth floor will be given over to a restaurant. On the ground floor will be separ ate barbers' shops for boys and men, and hot and cold baths for the use of customers. The special attention given to rooms for games and recreation is part of the policy which will be followed by tho Stores, of devoting great attention to sporting wear and games requisites. It has taken just over seven months to carry the building to its present stage including excavations. The basement, ground floor and portion of the first ere already In use. Several more floors are nearly complete, and It is anticipated that the entire structure will be ready for Immediate occupation within nine months.
