RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2021:DATE: 1858-;ASSOCIATIONS: Forman, Peter;DESIGNER: John Morton?;BUILDER: John Morton..GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of SignificanceRow Houses. 20·22 Heffernan LaneHistoryBuilt: 1858-Peter Forman commissioned builder, John Morton, to construct two cottages here in 1858, each of brick and four rooms . Chinese ownership prevailed around the early 1900s (Mrs. Lee Lang Quang) after a long tenure by Forman, and later Mrs. A. Forman 2. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Chinese occupied the houses, with names such as Ah Tuow. Hong Kee, Wing Cheong. Hay Shing and Ah Won recurring in rate books. Louis Cadby and Bertram Howell were owners in the c1910-1950s with Chinese tenants continuingDescriptionPresumably, a much altered, originally two-storey; brick house pair which has been all but absorbed into the adjoining store. Early plans show doorways on the south and north ends of the row with two windows at the centre. The present three windows and an enlarged doorway may be these openings.External IntegrityOne storey removed, openings altered, and wall restuccoed (if not totally demolished).StreetscapeAppears as part of 14-18 Heffernan Lane, with similar siting and fenestration.SignificancePossibly a remnant of the oldest residences continually occupied by Chinese in the precinct but much altered and symbolic only of their historical role..GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYSources;RB= Municipal rate books; D= DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS AND KENNY, SANDS & MCDOUGALL1 CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONS 480 12.6.58: RB 1859.609f2 RB 1900.379f: RB 1906. 362f3 RB 186S,4S2f: RB 1882.4S6f; RB 1908, 349f4 RB 1950,236f: RB I915. 317f.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX:Record 72307 Forman, Peter Melbourne VIC Houses Morton, John - Little Lonsdale St 1858 06 12 480, MCC registration no 480 [Burchett Index].
