General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : DPeriod : Early Victorian (c1859)Grantee : P Hayes 1854History- John Griggs who owned 3 Little Provost Street was probably the first owner of this house in 1859, but it soon passed to James Andrews. By 1862, it changed hands again, being owned by a Mr. Solomon for the next ten years. He in turn sold it to a Mrs. Daley who lived there with her husband for the following twenty years.Description - Like 1 Little Provost Street, this may have been face brick, has simple fenestration and also an arched doorway (sic): the roof is a transverse gable.Integrity - Stucco appears to have been applied to the brickwork and the parapet altered; new windows appear to have been added, with a new downpipe shutters and an awning.Streetscape - Part of a row of small narrow frontage cottages of the 1850-60s, confined in a narrow street.Significance - Architecturally, an altered, early house form, but part of a notable early streetscape: of local importance. Historically, remnant of the earliest cottage types in the area's history, built typically in narrow streets and evoking North Melbourne’s role as an area of cheap housing in the post-gold period.Recommendations - Repaint in typical colours; consider zoning~ provisions to maintain original use and form.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1. The doorway has a top light and is not arched, as proposed in 1983.
