Shown as two-storey in c1877 9, the valuation of the early 1880s had increased substantially from the early 1870s when valuers descriptions were brick shops with one to three rooms each, and a workshop or forge included 10. However these descriptions did not alter into the 1880s and 1890s, indicating no major reconstruction. 11Occupiers through this period included the Quittenton Brothers (old clothes shop 12) at 163-167 (c1880-c1920), Fred and James Tilly (169) during the early 1900s 13 and Henry Pasner (q.v.) in during the 193Os-50s. In that period Ihe row was owned by the Crisp Estate. 14DescriptionA two-storey stuccoed conservative Renaissance revival shop and residence with a simple cornice and entablature moulding and the traditional splayed corner at the lane.External integrityMany upper level windows blocked or altered, awnings, street canopy and air units added and ground level shop front replaced. The lane elevation, parapet and finish are new and openings at ground-level have been blocked 15.StreetscapeCommencement of a cohesive 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape, albeit much altered.SignificanceLimited integrity to its original simple form limits the building's capacity to express any historical era or occupation but it provides an identifiable old form in a generally later but similar streetscape.Contributes to precinctNotes9 Dove plans10 Municipal rate books [RB] 1882, 1759f., 1920, 1256f.11 RB1890, 168112 MAHLSTEDT & GEE 1888. By his ignorance, incapacity. dishonesty,. And indolence he has drained and plundered it till it is now almost on the verge of insolvency; but your husband has taken mighty good care to have feathered his nest out of it. …And now, at the age of 72. when he should be enjoying the autumn of his life amongst the flowers he loves, my father is compelled to work and save harder than ever ..It is a fight to a finish between your husband and I, and I will win out."see alsohttps://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/119782529Charge of Assault Dismissed.A lively little rumpus, the outcome, evidently, of a long-standing feud between George Quittenton, son of the head serang of the well-known firm of Quittenton Brothers, the clothe me quick second-hand clobber purveyors of 163 Russell-street, and his brother-in law, Richard Chugg, manager of the establishment, had its sequel in a case heard in the City Court on Tuesday, when Chugg was proceeded against, onsummons, charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm to the afore said George Quittenton…On the day of the alleged assault he saw informant with his hand under his rain-coat, and caught him by the arm. when bang.BANG WENT THE PISTOL.One of the bullets grazed his leg: he did not feel the second shot. Informant then ran out of the shop crying out."You've done your dash You've done your dash!-" ..._________________________________________DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS AND KENNY, SANDS & MCDOUGALL188089 Nathan, Samuel, furnishing warehouseRight-of-wayUnicorn hotel, Neale, AnthonyBourke St.1910Bullens Lane163-165 Quittenton, Bros, secondhand clothiers167 Quittenton.
