General notes:
Building: Former C Hubbert & Co Building (This Firm had erected a smaller office building, in a similar Moderne style, nearby at 239-241 Bouverie Street, Carlton [See ; BIF-CAR 101256].)Building type: FactoryPeriod; Date: Inter-War; 1942-43History : The building at 157-163 Pelham Street first appears in Sand & McDougall directory in 1944, when it was occupied by C Huppert & Company, a firm of engineers. Around the same time, this firm also occupied a similar Modern building at 239-241 Bouverie Street ( see separate datasheet). It is possible that both buildings were designed by the firm's own staff. The occupied the premises in Pelham Street until 1952., when the building was taken over E J White Pty Ltd, textile manufacturers.Hubbert's company remained at the Bouverie Street address until the 1960's.Description: The building at 157-163 Pelham Street is a double-storey brick Morderne commercial building. The ground floor is of manganese brick, with cream brick to the first floor. The façade is dominated by a gridded window wall, to the west composed of numerous square window openings. The rusticated brick wall a the lower level curves inwards towards the west of the façade, forming a recessed entrance porch. There is a recent third level addition, also in the face brick, at the west end of the building.Significance: The office building at 157-163 Pelham Street, Carlton, is of local aesthetic and historical interest. it is a typical example of a commercial building in the Moderne style, and it demonstrates the inter-War phase of commercial development which characterises this part of Carlton. Its connection with the engineering firm of C Hubbert & Company, who also built and occupied a similar building in Bouverie Street, is also of some interest.Intactness / Condition: Good
