Carte-de-visite of Emilie Atkin, daughter of a chemist in Errol St at the time, North Melbourne, c 1880.Notes: The carte de visite (French for visiting card), abbreviated CdV, was a small photograph which was patented in Paris by photographer André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri in 1854. Such photographs were the size of a visiting card, and were commonly traded among friends and visitors in the 1860's. Albums for the collection and display of cards became a common fixture in Victorian parlors.
