DERIVED FROM GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : D3Period : Mid Victorian (1876)Grantee : B Bowater 1858History- Thomas Avis, whose unusual family name is so well known in North Melbourne, owned this house for at least 20 years after its construction in 1876, and occupied it for most of that time, the only other occupant being one Charles Hare. Thomas Avis was a long-time resident of the area, beginning as a cabinet maker in 1864 on the corner of Arden and Errol Streets. His business must have prospered to the extent that he was able to build Rara Avis Terrace in Chapman Street in 1873 and his own substantial house in 1876. His occupation was cited as artist in later years.Description - A parapetted doub1e-fronted villa with originally dichrome face-brick walls and stucco details. It has a timber verandah and a gabled parapet pediment, centrally placed.Integrity - The side-walls have been bagged and painted and new stucco added to the facade; the verandah has been rebuilt and a high masonry wall added at the frontage.Streetscape - An isolated building but distinguished by its wide frontage to a small lane.Significance- Architecturally, so altered is the building that it possesses integrity to its construction date in form only. Historically, more so that Rara Avis Terrace nearby in Chapman Street, this villa is connected with Thomas Avis, one of North Melbourne's more colourful personalities; of local interest .___________________________References:1.
