General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1871)Grantee : C S Ward 1865Tailor, Southwell Coultas, had what was described as a five room brick house; built in 1871. The prominent tailor, Thomas Coultas, of the Melbourne firm Scourfield and Coultas, who lived at 15 Howard Street, may have been related to Southwell. However, by the 1880s, Coultas Brothers (James and Southwell) owned a tailoring firm in Swanston Street.Southwell Coultas also financed the construction of the adjoining row houses at 78-84 Molesworth Street in 1881-2, retaining ownership of both properties, but resided elsewhere thereafter. Residents at 76 Molesworth included Mary Howith, a boarding house keeper, Christopher Mossop, a mason, and Mary Graco.Description- A two-storey, simply parapetted and stuccoed row house with a two level cast-iron verandah, panelled iron decoration and an iron picket fence.Integrity - Generally original.Streetscape - Contributing part of the important Molesworth Street residential precinct.Significance- Architecturally, near original and an early example of a common row house form and part of an important residential streetscape. Historically, the home of a locally prominent tailor and developer of adjoining, contributive streetscape elements (78-84 Molesworth Street); of local importance.Recommendations - repaint in typical or original colours.References:(RB= Rate book; WD= Victoria Post Office Directory)1.
