RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2021:__________________________________________________Style: Gothic RevivalPeriod; VictorianDATE: 1883-4;ASSOCIATIONS: English Scottish & Aust. Bank. Co.;DESIGNER: Terry & Oakden;BUILDER: W H Reaves..GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of SignificanceHistoryBuilder, W H Reaves, constructed this polychrome Gothic revival design by architects Terry & Oakden, in the period 1883- 4. Opening as a branch of the English, Scottish & Australian Chartered Bank, it replaced the previous Kind Street branch, (near the corner of Little Bourke Street and the Star of the West Hotel), managed by Charles M Williams. Annie McCubbin's bakery had occupied this site, prior to the erection of the new branch. Terry & Oakden had inherited Leonard Terry's thriving bank design firm and continued with the Carlton London Chartered Bank (1876), National Banks at Bairnsdale, Kyneton, Maffra, Footscray and Romsey (1876 - 9), all generally in the classical mode. ES & A Banks had almost all been designed by the firm and its predecessor (Terry) up until c1884, (Terry's death). They included Brighton, South Melbourne, Oakleigh, West Melbourne, Flemington and Kew. Only the scholarly Gothic Revival, Collins Street Head Office, had been done by another architect (William Wardell), with the now altered Camberwell branch also being attributed to him. Gothic revival is almost peculiar among banks to the ES & A and apparently attributable to George Verdon (General Manager, 1871 - 91) and his great love of Gothic architecture. As a sub-group of predominantly classical bank architecture, they are distinctive and are also for the broad commercial grouping. Terry & Oakden, although second in the execution of Gothic revival to Wardell, were also responsible for a large number of polychrome Gothic Revival Wesleyan Churches, which had sufficiently demonstrated their abilities in the area for the General Manager's tastes. British architects, Waterhouse, Street and Butterfield, might also claim some influence.DescriptionAn extensive building for a branch bank of the 1880s, it possesses all of the hallmarks of the Italian flavoured Gothic revival (as interpreted via England). Steep gabled and slated roofs, oculi, pointed arcades, lancet windows and apex chimneys all combine to enhance the picturesque exposition of the style. Apart from the ES & A Head Office, only the 1889 North Fitzroy London Chartered Bank Branch (by the same firm) is more effective.External IntegrityBricks have been painted, signs, glazed doors and air units added.StreetscapeSuccessful, but isolated, corner building design.SignificanceOf a rare, stylistic and ownership subgroup of bank and commercial architecture, generally given the use of polychrome Gothic revival in the face of almost total compliance with the Classical revival in commercial architecture elsewhere..GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM cites source 85,p177;CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONS 516;.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX: RecordBuilding Permit Application71747 Terry & Oakden E S & A Bank West Melbourne VIC Banks Deague, W H - Best St Nth Fitzroy 1883 10 2 516-MCC registration no 516 [Burchett Index].
