Four years later 97 Chapman Street was constructed and it too was added to by 1880. Duncan retained ownership of both houses until at least 1895, but rented 97 to various tradesmen and women, e.g. Joseph Carter, a draper; Charles Carle, a carpenter; and Bessie Munro, who like most women of the time, had no listed occupationDescription - A formerly rock face, basalt masonry hipped-roof duplex with hammered finish basalt quoins and lintols, and six-pane sash windows. Itappears to have never possessed a verandah and once had a cellar encompassing the entire house. It is of a typical form and finish of the time.Integrity - 95 has been stuccoed and both houses given a new tiled roof; the fence and door of 95 has been replaced whilst that of 97 has been also, but sympathetically.Streetscape - Among the earliest houses in the street and sited on the end of a relatively original part of the precinct, albeit of a contrasting form and finish.Significance-Architecturally, of potentially high regional significance due to its age and material and juxtapositioning within the streetscape,Historically, one of the many early mason-built and owned cottages in North and West Melbourne: of local importance..Recommendations - Restore roof, wall finish, fence and elements of 95 and repaint trim in typical or original colours; use ogee gutters..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)RB 1866-67, 2207; RB 1869-70, 2353;RB 1873- 74, 2474; RB 1880-81, 2608;RB 1890-91, 2782; RB 1895-96, 2706.___________________________NOTE: added facade stucco had been removed by 1991.___________________________RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2024:.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX85171 Duncan, Alexander - Johnston St Fitzroy VIC Houses Duncan, Alexander 1857 01 21 42-MCC registration no 42 [Burchett Index].
