General notes:
Grading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1859)As with the many masons in this street, John Lees probably built these two houses for himself. He owned them both from 1859 until 1875, after which his wife, Ann's name is given as the owner until at least 1895. For short intervals, John and Ann lived in either one of the houses, but generally they were leased to such folk as Percy Cheeseman, William Sidebottom, Hepsibath Butt and Samuel Smart, the bran moulder. The houses may have been improved around 1881 - 5.Notable features include the fence, stone finishes, stone details and verandah (c1910). Basalt masonry, parapetted row houses, with added brick entablature and scrolls and brick verandah side walls. A bullnose verandah and associated cast iron decoration appear to be from c1900, an iron picket fence/balustrade is at the frontage. Integrity - Generally original to the last renovation of c1900. Streetscape - Contributing part of the early residential streetscape of Dryburgh Street south.Architecturally, of mixed periods, but the original form is visible and intact, representing early house construction in stone by its mason owner which was a characteristic of many houses in this street, of local importance. Historically, among the oldest group of houses in the area and evocative by its material of the concentration of stone masons in this location, of local importance
