General notes:
Image held by North Melbourne Library. In 1901, to honour the Australian Federation Royal Visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, the "Illuminated Railway Towers" were temporarily set up on the opposite corners of Flinders Street and Princes Bridge, where Flinders Street Railway Station and Federation Square now stand. The plans were drawn up by James Fawcett, architect of Flinders Street railway station, later built between 1903 and 1910. Each tower was festooned with 3,400 lamps. Their colours ranged from green at the base, to 17 shades of red on the spire, with white incandescent lights at the top.
