Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1913History:The house at 7 Belmont Road was built c.1913 on Lots 1 & 2 of a large 1897 subdivision which saw most of Kensington, Bayswater and Belmont Roads subdivided into suburban lots with 44 to 50 foot frontages. The house is first listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1914, when the occupant was Thomas White, who remained there until at least 1920..Description:Sylvania is a single-storey weatherboard Edwardian villa, with a hipped and gabled corrugated galvanised steel roof. L-shaped in plan and set on a large site, the house has a gabled bay and a bullnose-profile verandah which runs the length of the facade, and has turned timber posts. Windows are paired timber-framed double-hung sash windows with highlights, and the half-glazed entry door has a fanlight. The woven wire front fence probably dates from the inter-War period..Significance:Sylvania, at 7 Belmont Road, Kensington, is of local aesthetic and historical importance. It is an intact representative example of the type of larger Edwardian villas which were constructed in Kensington in the early twentieth century. It contributes to the intact Belmont Road streetscape.
