General notes:
Grading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1863)Grantee R Purcell & H Glass 1852___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History - These row houses were formerly the Souter Johnny (or Johnnie) Hotel, and prior to 1881, the Curzon Hotel, from 1862 when it was built for Patrick Donohue. He continued to own it for over 10 years, after which it was bought by Patrick and Anne Darcy. The hotel's later name commemorated an Irish hero.Donohue acted as publican for the first 3 years; other licensees being Patrick Coglin, Thomas Ryan, Anne Darcy and John O'Connor. The history of the hotel had a distinctly Irish flavour, not unusual in North Melbourne where in the 1860s, 73% of unskilled workers were Irish. 2Description - A two-storey, parapetted and quoined stuccoed brick building, now appearing to be row houses but formerly an hotel (possibly divided into bar and residential). The asymmetrical fenestration suggests two stages of construction but the central entablature and remnant gabled roof walls, at either side, match, although the roof itself has since been altered: being divided by a party wall parapet for its extensive length. Six pane sashes survive in all windows as do four-panel doors.Integrity - Generally original Streets cape - Isolated early part of the streetscape, relating to 569 Queensberry Street (qv) and 68-70 Curzon Street (qv).Significance - Architecturally, probably an original hotel from 1863 with the typical shallow, repeating side-gable form of early structures: of regional significance. Historically, one of many former hotels in North Melbourne, sited near to the Benevolent Asylum and incongruously not on a corner, but among the older examples and near original: of local importance.Recommendations - Repaint in original or typical colours..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
