LTD 1976 FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS PRESERVATION COUNCIL; MELBOURNE: THE AREA BOUNDED BY VICTORIA, SPRING, LONSDALE AND SWANSTON STS (source 77)1.12 Lonsdale Street east was the centre of the better class of prostitutes, including the famous houses kept by Scotch Maude, 3ifdy O'Connor and Madame Brussells (who occupied a house at 32-36 Lonsdale Street, replaced by three small shops in 1914)..Site previously occupied by houses owned by Madam Brussels, the best known of Melbourne’s more fashionable brothel keepers. Madam Brussells and the house itself were the centre of scandal which to-the resignation of the Speaker of the House (Sir Samuel Gillott) in 1906.The site noted as Brussell’s Cottage on the 1895 M. M. B. W. plan but in 1909 is described as a “brick and wood house and factory" (1) which Indicates a change of use.In 1914 Nos. 32 and 34 (the earlier numbers for the whole site) were owned and occupied by Lugton and Co. , Engineers, They had occupied the site immediately behind Brussell Cottage (27 Little Lonsdale Street) since 1889 and before that 25 Little Lonsdale Street (See L2). The directory for 1914 (3) lists 3 tenants - National Press (32 Sunbeam Co. ( Mitre Tasso and Michael Abourzik ( 36), so it is likely that Lugton and Co. built the factories for letting. 22 Architectural2.1 Completed by 1.514 and described as “brick stores and workshop"Footnotes(1) M.C.C.
