General notes:
Period: VictoriaConstruction: pre-1882History:The house at 17 Westbourne Road was constructed prior to 1882. The rate books for 1882-83 show T L Robb as the owner of a four-room wooden house with a Nett Annual Value of #18 and a population of four. The house was occupied by William Travers (later spelt Travis), a butcher. The Sands & McDougall directory is inconclusive as to the earlier history of the house. The house was owned by Robb, who owned the shop at 43 Epsom Road (see separate datasheet) and a number of other cottages and houses in this part of Kensington until at least 1887, whilst Travis remained as tenant until 1893..Description:The house at 17 Westbourne Road is a single-storey double-fronted weatherboard Victorian villa with a corrugated galvanised steel transverse gabled roof, constructed on a sloping site. Symmetrically composed, timber-framed double-hung sash windows flank the central entrance door. A verandah extends across the facade, considerably altered by the replacement of the original posts with steel columns and the removal of the original frieze decoration. The chimney is of brick with a corbelled capping. The timber picket front fence, whilst not original, is probably an early twentieth century replacement..Significance:The house at 17 Westbourne Road, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. Historically, the house represents the first phase of suburban development of the part of Kensington west of Epsom Road. Aesthetically, the house is a reasonably intact example of a Victorian timber villa which contributes to the Victorian and Edwardian streetscape of Westbourne Road.
