General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : DPeriod : Federation (1917-1918)Grantee : H Peck & Co 1867History- This long row of houses was built for Clement Davidson of Wreckyn Street, North Melbourne, in 1917-18, as a rental proposition. His tenants included Edwin Phillips, George Wood, James Fermanis and John O'Sullivan.Description- Single-fronted, single-storey parapetted row houses (6) of red brick with cast-iron decorated verandahs and iron picket fences. Casement sash windows and segment-arched top-glazed doors are typical of the date but the parapetted row house form with its festoons and vermiculated panels are of the earlier century. Rectangular parapet entablatures are placed on 177 and 187.Integrity - Generally original.Streetscape - Opposite 156-62 Errol Street (qv) and thus contributing to the early 20th century nature of this part of Errol Street by the materials frontage width and siting.Significance- Architecturally, a late use of a 19th century style on a common form, but contributive to a residential precinct: of local interest.Historically, little is known of Davidson or his tenants; of local interest.Recommendations - Repaint trim in original or typical colours.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory; BW MMBW Property Service Plan)1.
