General notes:
Photograph courtesy of Mr. Neil McMaster.North Melbourne Town Hall and Municipal buildings, Errol St., 1883.Notes: The town hall clock reads 2:30pm as the town's business proprietors and locals pose for a streetscape photograph. The author of the photo was a watchmaker, and the advertising banner for his business can be seen just right of the main arched parapet at the centre of the business residences. Just below, "sale" banners advertise a drapery proprietor's response to the threat of economic instability incurred by Victoria's parliamentary dissolution in February 1883 (Source: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/43476892).A horse and carriage are visible closest to the Town Hall. Advertising can also be seen for Yeoman's & Co., an enamel portrait photography business which operated for 18 years(Source: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/artist/10705/).Enamel portrait photography is today still practiced, but considered a lost art.The road is still many years away from accomodating motor vehicles and bitumen.
