General notes:
Map of Melbourne showing the River Townend which flowed roughly along the line of Elizabeth Street and caused a great deal of flooding in early Melbourne. It was originally called Williams Creek. The River Townend flowed from Bouverie Stream which rose in the University of Melbourne and flowed along present day Bouverie Street. Also shown is the Ensco River, flowing from the north-west corner of William and Flinders street. It has been suggested that both these waterways were named after grocers but there is no evidence of that. There is no note of date or provenance on this map
