General notes:
The shop at 90 Melrose Street first appears in the rate book for 1899/1900, described as a seven-room brick shop valued at £60. It was owned and occupied by Joseph Johnson, a grocer. He was still there in the rate book for 1905, when the building was identified as a brick 'corner' shop between Nos. 52 and 102 Melrose Street. Later editions of the Sands & McDougall directory record that Johnson's grocery business operated from the address until the late 1920s. At that time, the shop was numbered as 90a Melrose Street, as W J Johnson, grocer an wine and spirit merchants. The premises was then taken over by Arthur Jackson, who continued the business as a licensed grocer.It is a double-storey rendered brick shop and residence. The first floor of the front elevation has three single timber-framed double-hung sash windows with moulded architraves. The roof is concealed behind a simple parapet with a semi-circular pediment and ornamented with orbs. The shopfront has been altered and a cantilevered awning added.It is of local aesthetic and historical significance. Apart from alterations to the shopfront, it is a substantially intact late Victorian shop that makes a positive contribution to the Curran and Melrose Street streetscapes. Its continuous use as a licensed grocery shop since 1899 is of some historical note, demonstrating a commercial typology which is rapidly becoming obsolete.
