General notes:
Grading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1873)Grantee : Morgan & Co 1859In 1873 Newman Levi, a property speculator, either bought or commissioned these two houses from contractors, Downie and Sturgess. Two years later, he purchased the five houses to the north (152-6 Capel Street). During the period 1870-95, he leased houses in Lorne Terrace to such people as Henry Phillips, a Baptist minister (1875), Joseph Herrick, a blacksmith (1880), and Arthur Wragg, an engraver (1890); Mr Levi lived at nearby from c1880.Two-storey, stuccoed brick row houses with two-level cast-iron verandahs between party walls but no parapet walls at the façade or dividing the roof (as required by the Melbourne Building Act): adopting the transverse gabled end walls and iron-clad roof shape synonymous with terraces of the 1860-70s. Similarly decoration is confined to orbs, masks and consoles at each party wall and openings are simply treated; some French doors being evident at the upper levels. Iron picket fences were used at the frontage. Notable features include the verandahArchitecturally, of little individual significance, apart from its age, but contributes to the streetscape. Historically, an example of the predominance of speculatively built rows in the study area, particularly in this location, from the 1870s onwards of local interest.
