General notes:
Grading as at 1991: BPeriod : Late Victorian (1890)Grantee : C Jones 1864___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE.History- Matthew Starke (Stark), North Melbourne dairy produce merchant, may have commissioned this house during 1890-1 for investment purposes. His first tenant was storeman, John Bewsher, where his occupation was listed as a tobacconist.Description- A two-storey, stuccoed brick house with a two-level cast-iron verandah. Possessing more ornament than its neighbour 32 Chapman Street, Ormond House has a piered and balustraded parapet, bracketted lower cornice and a distinctive broken pediment, with orb, at the upper entablature. Moulded stucco architraves, stopped and continuous are used on all openings and unusual dwarf columns are attached to each party-wall face. Stuccoed piers and iron pickets provide the front fence. There is a distinctive, asymmetrically composed balustrade cast-iron (sun flower in an urn, lattice pattern and diagonal running-dog motif). The architect may have been A E Duguid. [Building Engineering and Mining Journal 5 September 1891 Supplement 3]Integrity - Generally original.Streetscape - Contributive part of this varied residential precinct, in particular as linked with 32 by scale and form and 22-8 by materials and period details.Significance-Architecturally, a successful design in original condition of a common form built within the inner suburbs, on an elevated site and set within a residential precinct: of regional importance.Historically, one of many investment properties in the area, with Bewsher as a link with its early history.Recommendations - Repaint in typical or original colours..References:None provided in GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE: following is from research notes held by RHSV.D 1895 (30) Jno Brewster, refer 7-9 Leveson St also linked to Brewster;RB 1895-6, 2741 (no 30) John Brewster storeman occupier, Starke as owner brick dwelling 6 rooms £38 NAV;RB 1891-2, 2827 John Brewster storeman occupier, Stark as owner brick dwelling 10 rooms £60 NAV;RB 1890-1, 2820 empty Starke as owner brick dwelling unfinished £40 NAV___________________________RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2024:GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM 1985___________________________NEWSPAPERS (TROVE):1893https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/66165267Sunday morning the premises of Matthew Stark, produce merchant, of 6 Haines Street, North Melbourne, were burglariously entered, and the sum of £4.10a.
