General notes:
Report to Superintendent of Markets from the Abattoirs and Cattle Markets Committee for the year ended 31 August 1943. the report discusses the figures compared to previous years. It also discusses the percentage of beef being canned for the armed services. The coincides with the enactment of the National Emergency Regulations and the Commonwealth Meat Controller. There were some compulsory acquisitions of beef for the canning industry. This was to ensure the greatest possible amount was available for the Armed Forces and for export to the United Kingdom. The report also discusses the new staff facilities, and the use of vehicles. Even in 1943, the number of horse drawn vehicles was increasing as they were preferred for short trips around the cityMessrs Smorgon & Sons had applied to have part of the Abattoir turned into a cannery, but there were many objections and they chose a site near Braybrook.
