General notes:
Building: Lincoln HouseBuilding type: OfficePeriod; Date : Inter-War ; c.1933History: The factory at 625-629 Swanton Street was built in 1933. The Sand & McDougall directory for 1933 list a 'factory being built'. The following year, the building is noted as spinning mills operated by Davis Coop & Co. Ltd. Davis Coop & Co. occupied the building until at least 1960. By 1971, the building was known as Lincoln House, and was occupied by the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Schools Victoria and the Victorian School of Speech Therapy, Later known as Lincoln Institute, and later still as part of la Trobe University.Description : Lincoln House is a stripped Classical inter-War factory, originally of five storeys but with a sixth storey addition. The Swanton Street Street façade is expressed vertical by full height red brick pilaster strips, and horizontally by alternate multi-paned strip windows and rendered spandrel panels. The façade is surmounted by a heavy rendered parapet with Art Deco relief decoration. The entrance, to the extreme north of the façade, is marked by a stepped pediment.Significance: Lincoln House is of local aesthetic and historical interest. Historically, the building demonstrates the industrial development of Carlton into the twentieth century. Its later occupation by educational institution is also of interest. Aesthetically, the building is a lagely intact example of an larger inter-War factory building which gains destination from its impressive scale which is major landmark in this part of Swanston Street.Intactness / Condition : Good
