Grading 129-131 as at 1999 : DPeriod : inter-warGrantee : A E Cohen 1854(see also GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNE for 133 Arden St)___________________________AlIom Lovell & Associates 1999 City of Melbourne Heritage Review129-131 Arden StHistoryThe building at 129-131 Arden Street first appears in the Sands & McDougall directories in 1928. The building was construcled as an extension to the adjacent Melbourne City mission. The mission was established in 1854 by the first Anglican Bishop of Melbourne, Bishop Charles Perry, and remains a major provider of welfare service in Melbourne. It occupied the Arden Street building until the early 1990s. The building is now used as a men’s' day centre associated with men's crisis accommodation centre Ozanam House run by the charily St Vincent de Paul.DescriptionThe building al 129-131 Arden Street is a nineteenth century single-storey building of brick construction, designed in an unusual Tudor Gothic revival style. The facade has a central bay with a castellated parapet flanked by two slightly projecting bays with pedimented parapets. One of the narrow side bays has a pointed arched opening containing the double entrance doors, while both the central bay and the other side bay contain non-original multi-paned sash windows. All openings are finished with rendered hood moulds. The brickwork, probably originally red face, has been painted.SignificanceThe building at 129-131 Arden Street, North Melbourne is of local aesthetic, historical and social interestConstructed during the inter-War period, it is an intact example of an unusual Tudor Gothic Revival style; of note is the castellated and pedimented parapet. The building is one of a number in the North Melbourne associated with the provision of social services.Grading ReviewUpgraded from E to D. The building should be retained for its aesthetic interest in the streetscape. Its construction for the Melbourne City mission is of interest in the social history of the area.Original Datasheet129-133 Arden Street, North Melbourne (No. 133 graded C)___________________________RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2024:.CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONCard index129-1331926 Aug 8822? £1876- alterations and additions to hall___________________________NEWSPAPERS (TROVE):1926MELBOURNE CITY MISSION.North Melbourne Branch. The extension of the Melbourne City Mission's charitable and educational activities in North Melbourne has for some time past necessitated the use of larger premises to cope with its growing activities, and with this object in view the committee early this year purchased a substantial two-story brick building, with three adjoining cottages, at the corner of Abbotsford and Arden streets, North Melbourne. Plans were prepared by Messrs. Edwin J. and C. L. Ruck, and on the site- of the cottages a fine hall has been erected, and the existing building altered to provide, a- large kindergarten room and several smaller class rooms. The hall will be officially opened this afternoon by Mr. H. H. Smith, M.L.C. The new hall is faced externally in clinker brick, with cement mouldings of Gothic character, and has been designed to accommodate 235 persons. Large doors are provided both from the entrance porch and from the hall itself, opening into the adjoining building, thus enabling the two buildings to be used as one or as separate units, as may be desired.A central hall or lobby has been planned,, around which is grouped; the kindergarten room and other classrooms, while a wide stair case runs from this lobby up to a first 'floor, which is divided into classrooms and caretaker's quarters; On the ground floor, also, ore to be found ' well, equipped - lavatories end shower rooms for the use of the boys and girls attending the mission
