This is the first entry in which the following entry is found: 299 stone shop, 16' x 60' - owner Grove 301 stone shop, 16' x 60' - owner Knight 313 stone shop, 16' x 60' - owner May.ARCHITECTURALThe ground floors of these buildings have been extensively modified but the upper floors, with a notable absence of embellishment, still display the lightly dressed masonry - covered by many coats of paint. The windows have been accentuated by the use of featured stones and sills - reminiscent of some of the more economical Government buildings of the time. The window proportion establishes a continuity with the adjacent Stramit group.RECOMMENDATIONThe facade (scale, upper storey detailing and relationship to the adjacent Stramit Buildings) is the most important aspect of the buildings that should be registered. The shops originally had large verandahs and their removal has tended to increase the severity of the facades intersection with the street plane. As a group, the buildings are relatively intact and taken with their early group construction date there appears to be sufficient reason to recommend registration.___________________________LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEXSerach 1855-1856 Elizabeth St shops, nil___________________________DE GRUCHY & LEIGH, 1866.
